Call for nominations off Newfoundland

Tracts in Eastern Newfoundland and Jeanne d'Arc regions to be considered for 2020 rounds

Canadian regulators have issued a call for nominations for parcels off the country's east coast to be included in bidding rounds next year.

The call issued Thursday by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board covers tracts in the Eastern Newfoundland and the Jeanne d'Arc regions, according to a release issued Thursday. Subsequent calls for bids would close in November of 2020 with licences being awarded in early 2021.

The Jeanne d'Arc basin is home to the region's major producing fields: Hebron, Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose.

South-eastern Newfoundland has seen less activity, but interest appears to be picking up. The area has been the focus of two strategic environmental assessments, and TGS and PGS carried out a a 3D seismic survey of the region in 2017. In addition, a regional assessment of exploratory drilling east of Newfoundland and Labrador is being developed, according to the release.

"That assessment will build upon the experience and knowledge gained in assessing previous projects, reduce duplication in processes and information, and result in more efficient reviews for exploration projects," The C-NLOPB said.
